Two teens drown in lake on IIT-M campus

An outing with friends turned fatal for two teenage boys as they drowned in a lake inside the IIT Madras campus on Thursday. While the body of R Gerald (19) was fished out, Murthy Pandiarajan’s (17) body was not found till late on Thursday night.

Gerald was a second year diploma student and  Pandiarajan was waiting for Class 12 results after attending the board examinations. The incident happened around 3.30 pm when the duo scaled the compound wall and entered the campus with friends. They found a float made of drums in the lake near the Delhi House on the campus and got on it.

The float capsized and the group had to jump into the lake. As the gang reached the shore, they realised that Gerald and Pandiarajan were missing. They alerted a security guard on the campus and the parents of the victims too. 

As many as 30 personnel from Raj Bhavan, Guindy and Taramani fire stations immediately rushed to the spot and began the search. The security guards at the campus said it was common for youngsters to scale the wall and enter the campus without permission. They usually come to swim in the lake. They added that they had informed the institute management about the issue. 

The Kotturpuram police have registered a case under CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) and further investigations are on.
