The incident happened in a residential area at Mappedu, that falls within the Selaiyur police station limit.

The new outlet was reportedly functioning for the last one week. Residents alleged men consume liquor in the outlet and create trouble for the people.

It may be noted that the residents staged a protest in front of the shop two days ago and at that time, police and government officials had assured them that the shop will be closed in two days. As the officials did not stick to the promise, the residents started another round of protest in front of the shop on Sunday, which turned violent.

“On Sunday morning, a group of people from the Mappedu village gathered at the shop and raised slogans demanding to close the shop immediately. Police officers reached the spot and tried to pacify the agitators.

However, some of them pelted stones at the shop after which a few youngsters and women broke the gate and ransacked the entire place,” a police officer noted.

The agitating residents also broke all the chairs and tables in the bar and said that the protest will continue till the shop is closed.
