Official sources said that the MD plays the main role in the operation of MTC and higher-ups would take stock of the situation and fill the vacancy soon.
“The MD monitors the operation of 3,200 buses and has to communicate with every depot about the number of buses, repairs, breakdowns etc.,” an official said.
Another official pointed out that the MTC had recently bought spareparts worth Rs 68 lakh but failed to pay the amount. It led to an altercation between MTC officials and the company. Such an issue would not have arisen if the department had an MD.
Koathandam, a retired MTC staff and a member of Nathaji Transport Workers Union, said, “As MTC is facing a loss of revenue, they should operate buses in accordance with the routes which have high patronage. This should be decided by a team headed by the MD. So, higher-ups should fill the vacancy immediately.”
When contacted, a senior official said, “Promotion is decided based on seniority or merit. We will fill the vacancy soon.” As of now, state transport officials are monitoring the operations of the department, he added.
