Officials said that the necessary infrastructure works like constructing toilets, laying road and providing piped water supply and other minor works would be executed. CMDA officials said they have allotted Rs 33 crore for undertaking the works. “Storm water drainage works are already underway.

We will lay new roads for lorries bound to the market. Also, as the market is functioning round-the-clock, at least 20 high-mast lamps will be erected,” said a senior engineer on the condition of anonymity.

As far as drinking water is concerned, the CMDA would lay new pipeline to supply water to the traders and consumers. “Further, the complex will have water fountains at a couple of places in the premises. Moreover, toilets will be constructed in the premises and many waste bins will be put in place,” said another official.

“We are holding talks with Market Management Committee members to discuss about shutting the market once in a month to undertake maintenance works. A decision in this respect will be taken soon,” said the official, adding that they have already communicated the proposal of shutting of market to the higher officials. Meanwhile, traders have welcomed the move.

“We have been continuously submitting petitions to the authority. The officials have finally paid heed to the issues.

The biggest market lacks even basic amenities,” said V R Soundararajan, president of Koyambedu Wholesale Vegetable Traders Association. He added that despite paying tax, the officials were not undertaking any work and they would welcome, if the officials started taking up works.

It may be noted that Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had earlier visited the market and held discussion with the officials regarding the market’s functioning.
