Anti-Sterlite protests: Chennai reacts instantly, filmmaker Gowthaman arrested
Following the death of protesters of Sterlite in police shootout in Thoothukudi on Tuesday, activists and outfits staged agitations in the city condemning the police brutality.

Film director Gowthaman, who burned the effigy of Sterlite’s proprietor Anil Agarwal with 10 others near Press Club, were arrested by the Triplicane police.
Meanwhile, the CMBT police arrested a 28-year-old for hurling stones at an MTC bus (route No. 27B) going from CMBT to Anna Square near Nespakkam.
The man has been identified as R Azhagiri Thamizhar, a resident of Madipakkam, who belongs to an outfit called Thamizh Desiya Ilaignar Iyakkam. About 250 people who protested at the government guest house in Triplicane, CMBT, Chennai Collector’s office and Purasawalkam were detained.
Another 160 people staged road roko in Broadway bus stand, Ambattur bus depot and Tirvottiyur Ajax bus stand and dispersed after the police spoke with them.
