The police identified the accused as Kamal (35). His grandmother R Manimekhalai suffered severe injuries on her head and her back after repeated assault with the club.
Neighbours sensed something was amiss when they saw Kamal fleeing in panic. They visited Manimekhalai’s residence and found her lying in a pool of blood. They alerted police and informed the 108 ambulance services immediately. She was rushed to the government hospital in Ponneri, but she succumbed to her injuries on the way.
Thirupalaivanam police registered a case and based on inputs by neighbours, Kamal was arrested. After interrogation, police arrested Kamal for murdering his grandmother.
Police said that Manimekhalai lived with her daughter Latha in Vanchivakkam junction near Ponneri since her husband Ramamurthy expired. Latha’s son, Kamal, visited often and would demand for money to buy liquor. On Wednesday Kamal turned violent and fatally attacked the elderly woman in a fit of rage, when she refused to fulfil his demand.
