Residents on Gandhi Street, Ramachandran Street, Cart Track Road, Wason Street, Jawaharlal Nehru Street, Mambalam High Road and Maharajapuram Santhanam Salai have sought the intervention of the Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner, to resolve the civic issues.

R Sivaramakrishnan of Gandhi Street has complained to the Corporation stating that several problems like garbage collection, battered pavements and stray cattle menace have been affecting the area for a long time.

Talking to DT Next, he shared the list and said, “The new Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 have mandated source segregation of waste. Though the Corporation and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board are stake holders in the management of solid waste, we wonder why the system has not been implemented in our area when the same is being carried out in other areas.” He added that on Tanjore Street in the neighbourhood the system was in place and that the common bins have been dispensed with and the urban body was doing door to door collection of waste. Sivaramakrishnan also said that the garbage was being left unattended, sometimes even for a couple of days at a stretch.

Seeking a green cover, the residents have also sought the civic body’s involvement, as so far, the initiative of planting saplings has come from the residents themselves. The complaint also highlighted the lack of usable pavements that have been damaged by earth movers. A source from the Corporation said that speedy action would be initiated to resolve the problems in that area.
