Protests continue even on third day, CM’s security beefed up

Agitations and road blocks were held in various parts of the city, on the third consecutive day, in support of Sterlite protesters and in condemnation of the deaths due to police firing in Thoothukudi.

Outfits planned to lay siege on Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s official residence on Greenways Road as well as Deputy CM O Panneerselvam’s residence. Security was beefed up in the locality immediately.

Road rokos were staged in 17 spots across the city in which about 1000 men and women participated. Forty three men and 11 women were detained for protesting in front of the Secretariat as well as on Poonamallee High Road.

Members of Joint Action Council of Teachers Organisations - Government Employees Organisations (JACTTO-GEO) conducted a demonstration near Parrys Corner condemning the police firings.

More than 100 employees of various IT companies formed a human chain protest on Chennai-Trichy National Highway near Mahindra City, Chengalpattu, demanding closure of the Sterlite Copper plant.

DMK cadre staged protests condemning the arrest of their leader M K Stalin and 1,746 of them, including 109 women were detained at 26 places. They were released later in the day.

In another incident, Ashok Nagar police arrested a 23-year-old man for hurling stones at an MTC bus (route No 12B). V Karthik (20) of Ashok Nagar, an electrician by profession, hurled stones at the MTC bus on Duraisamy Road around 2 pm. Police said that he was under the influence of alcohol. Karthik has been remanded in judicial custody.
