As Nungambakkam observatory recorded 39.1 degrees Celsius, up from the Tuesday’s 39 degrees Celsius, while Airport experienced 40.6 degrees Celsius, a slight decrease from Tuesday’s 40.8 degrees Celsius.
Weathermen at Regional Meteorological Centre said that such temperature will continue to wilt the city for two more days due to heavy presence of Westerlies. An official of RMC told DTNext, “Chennai and suburbs will continue to record hottest temperatures in the next two days. If there is a low-pressure over Bay of Bengal, there will be a chance for rain. As of now, South and Western regions continue to record rainfall.”
Northern areas like Tiruvallur and Tiruttani recorded beyond 40 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, added the official. A city-based weather blogger said that it is well known peak summer conditions for Chennai typically happen when the Westerlies strengthen.
“With the low-pressure in Bay deepening along with monsoon dynamics, the Westerlies are strengthening thereby bringing the window of proper summer to Chennai and rest of North Tamil Nadu,” he said.
He added that the models were indicating the suburbs of Chennai are likely to see temperatures in the region between 39 and 40 degrees Celsius with further increase expected in a few days.
