Most students happy, others want break after Class 10

Most students, surprisingly, were welcoming of the exams and said that it would help them deal with the pressure of handling their Class 12 board exams. Sixteen-year-old Keerthana Krishnamurthy who scored 584, is thrilled with her marks and felt this would be a good launch pad for her to begin preparations for next year. 

“This has encouraged me to aim even higher and not to be lethargic,” says the Commerce group student from SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, who wishes to pursue a B Com degree and Corporate Secretaryship. But there are also others who feel this barely gives them a chance to relax – and it seems like three years of constant pressure could have an adverse effect. 

Though M Keerthana of Soundarapandi Subbamal School scored 561 marks, she says that students deserve a break in between their Class 10 and 12. “Considering we are the first batch – it has been quite stressful. There was no blueprint for us to follow.”

The Greater Chennai Corporation-run schools registered a pass percentage of 87.61 in the Class 11 board exam. The civic body runs 32 higher secondary schools, where 5,158 students (1,979 boys and 3,179 girls) appeared for the exa. Of this, 4,520 students (1,588 boys and 2,932 girls) passed. Two schools – Chennai Higher Secondary School, Koyambedu and Chennai Higher Secondary School, Lloyd’s Road – achieved a 100 per cent result.
