Over 1,500 families live in this area which includes Irumbuliyur, TTK Nagar, West Periyar Nagar, Kakaliamman Koil Nagar, Perumal Koil Nagar.
Roads in this neighbourhood, which were dug up for the Underground Drainage (UGD) work, have not been repaired even though the work was completed six months ago. As a result, small buses introduced by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) were stopped.
Even school buses are not coming inside these areas. Parents of school-going children suffer the worst as they are forced to drop their children at Tambaram for boarding the school bus, residents lament.
Speaking to DT Next, ‘Aanai’ Panneerselvam, who runs a NGO named Makkal Maamandram, said, “Irumbuliyur is one of the fastest growing areas in the suburbs. But the Tambaram municipality is not functioning properly.”
“We have raised complaints about the poor state of roads several times but no action has been taken,” he added.
This apart, they claim the water supply to their locality has become very erratic after the UGD work commenced.
“The culvert which was built recently at Rs 2.5 core was damaged in just 15 days,” alleged another resident, on condition of anonymity.
However, Tambaram Municipality officials refused to accept responsibility and said it was the duty of Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board to repair the roads.
When contacted, Municipal Engineer Ravichandran said, “Metro water officials should repair the roads. They have formed a separate team to identify what went wrong with the culvert and action will be taken.” He added that the roads will be repaired soon and small buses will again commence their trips to the locality.
