Escape bid foiled, 2 murder accused secured at Central

Two murder accused migrant labourers, who tried to escape to their native places hiding inside the crowded general compartment of express trains, were nabbed by the Government Railway Police (GRP) from the same train at Chennai Central. The arrests came after investigating officers in the two cases alerted the GRP about the possibility of the accused trying to flee the state.

In the first case, Naushad (35), a construction labourer from Bihar who has been working at Vengara village in Malappuram district in Kerala, was accused of allegedly stabbing his wife Kodhal (32) to death over family dispute on Wednesday. He immediately left the state with his two children.

Based on an alert from the police in Kerala that the accused could try to escape to Bihar from Chennai, ADGP Sylendra Babu instructed the force to tighten vigil at the stations here.

On Wednesday night, a team of personnel led by inspector Thomas Jesudoss searched Bihar-bound Dhanbad Express that reached Chennai Central from Kerala and found Naushad hiding in one of the general compartments.

He was handed over to Malappuram police on Thursday, and the children were handed over to Childline volunteers.

In the other case, Biju Hembram (25) from Odisha, accused of the murder of his colleague at Tirupur, was arrested when he was trying to escape to his hometown on the same train on Wednesday.

Biju Hembram allegedly threw a boulder on his friend and a colleague, Santhosh Nayak, also an Odisha native, following a quarrel in April and has been absconding since then.

The GRP personnel at Chennai Central, who already had his identity details, found him hiding in the bathroom of a general compartment when the train reached Chennai Central on Wednesday night. Hembram was arrested and handed over to Tirupur police.

Meanwhile ADGP Sylendra Babu on Thursday inspected the security measures at suburban trains and enquired the passengers about their grievances.
