The police had received a tip-off about Mani alias Manikandan and his gang moving around in the city in an SUV with weapons after he threatened somebody at gun point in Mambalam on Saturday. They also came to know of his hideout near Muttukadu and surrounded the place. The gang opened fire at the cops in a bid to escape but were overpowered.
The arrested were identified as CD Mani, Vinod, Sivakumar, Sori Suresh, Uri @Uriuran, Ilango and Madhavan. A case has been registered in Kanathur police station. Police said Mani has been booked under Goondas Act four times. Of the eight murder cases against him, five are pending trial and he has been acquitted in two cases while another case is being investigated.
Manikandan became CD Mani as he initially sold pirated DVDs in Teynampet. He is a resident of T Nagar and his wife lives in Tindivanam. He had been avoiding being tracked as he didn’t use a mobile phone. He has been a henchman for many in the field of real estate. He is ‘well known’ among builders in south Chennai as he collected Mamools from them to ensure ‘smooth’ construction work at the sites.
