It all started when five construction workers from Bihar stopped a  four-year-old boy, who was crossing the road alone. Police said the boy, Avinash, was left alone at home when his mother, Varalakshmi, went to a nearby shop on Kamarajar Street.

Varalakshmi failed to notice that the boy was running behind her. The labourers noticed the boy and one of them stopped to ask him why he was alone on the road.

Selvaraj, a neighbour of Varalakshmi, saw this and mistook them for child lifters. He confronted them and asked them the same. Panicked by the question, all five of them left the scene without answering him.

Selvaraj alerted the crowd and they followed the group on two-wheelers. While three of them escaped, they cornered two construction workers near Tiruvallur Salai. They were tied and beaten up by the group.

A police patrol team saw the commotion and rushed the duo to a private hospital nearby. They were later taken to a government hospital after first-aid. Police identified the victims as B Gopal Sahu (25) and K BinothVihari (22).

Police said that the duo is employed on contract with Metro Rail with Hari Krishna Bhora (25), Sathyanarayana Sethi (25) and Sibin Sahu (25). Gopal Sahu is known to Avinash’s family when he used to stay at Kamarajar Nagar six months ago.

Avinash used to play with him and Sahu was trying to help him when he was running on the road alone, police said. Police are trying to identify the people who attacked the two workers.
