Man arrested with gold worth Rs 36 lakh at airport

City Customs officials arrested a 24-year-old man from Puducherry for smuggling in gold and seized 1.2 kg gold, worth Rs 36 lakh, from him on Thursday.

The man arrested has been identified as Sheik Abdullah Shadik (24) from Puducherry who flew in from Malaysia. Shiek Abdullah landed at Chennai airport from Kula Lumpur on Malaysian Airlines flight on Thursday. 

While checking his luggage, the Immigration officials grew suspicious of him  because of his body language. They opened the battery of his laptop and found 12 pieces of gold shaped like batteries and wrapped with a black tape. The officials then arrested Sheik Abdulah and seized the gold. Further inquiries are under way.

Flight cancelled due to snag 

A Chennai-Bangalore flight was cancelled on Thursday after its pilot noticed a technical snag a few minutes before take off. The Air India flight AI1563 to Bangalore via Cochin had 101 passengers and crew. It was scheduled to depart at 11 am. It was delayed till 3 pm and was cancelled later.
