Paneerselvam was responding to a query from DMK legislator and former minister TM Anbarasan, who urged the government to expedite the works between Velachery and St Thomas Mount.

Panneerselvam said the MRTS project started in 2008 and works for 3.5 kilometres had been completed. The completion of the remaining 1.5 kilometres has been held up because a case was pending in the Madras High Court, he said. The owners of the land had approached the court complaining that the compensation to be given to them was not sufficient.

The court had completed the hearing and the judgment would be delivered soon, the deputy Chief Minister said. When the judgement was delivered, the works would be completed after distributing appropriate compensation for the land owners, Panneerselvam added.

Anbarasan, who raised the issue, said if the MRTS for St Thomas Mount and Velachery was completed, all the three railway facilities would be available at St Thomas Mount. It would benefit lakhs of people who could board ordinary trains, MRTS or Metro from the same railway station, he said.
