The issue seems to have united the opposition, including the DMK, Indian National Congress and BJP, who joined the protest. Residents who had gathered at the spot said that just when they were grappling with the effects of having one outlet in the locality, the upcoming shop was going to add to the chaos.
“The overflowing traffic due to the crowd assembled at the locality is a huge problem we face every Sunday. The stretch near the market is also unsafe because of the ruckus created by the drunkards. Women are the most harassed lot. We wonder what the locality will be like after the added outlet,” a resident said.
The residents expressed concern that the area near Swami Naicken Street sees a lot of commercial activity and that an outlet on the stretch would only render the traffic even more unmanageable.
