While police have picked up all 16 of them, their identities were not revealed as the girl could identify only three of them with names. The three men reportedly admitted to the crime.
Among the accused, four of them were lift operators and two were security guards of the apartment in Ayanavaram where the girl lives with her parents. The other accused were plumbers, electricians and maintenance staff, who frequent the apartment for works.
Police sources said that the accused misused the innocence of the victim, a Class 7 girl, and sexually abused her repeatedly within the apartment premises and threatened her at knifepoint.
The girl’s parents came to know about the incident through their elder daughter, who studies in a college at Bengaluru. After the minor girl complained of stomach pain, her parents inquired her and she revealed the abuse she underwent over six months.
The lift operators first ‘befriended’ her when she used the lift alone while going to the school and molested her, said police.
Later, the security guards too sexually abused her.
Sources said that the accused took the girl to isolated places in the apartment like the terrace and basement and molested her.
The girl’s father who runs a mobile phone retail and service outlet first lodged a complaint at Ayanavaram police station on Sunday and it was immediately forwarded to Vepery All-Women Police Station. A case was registered, and the girl was sent to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital for a medical examination.
A magistrate inquiry has also been ordered into the incident. The arrests are expected to be made based on magistrate’s report.
