The park, situated near the Tambaram police station, was popular with locals, who used it for their daily morning and evening walks. The park, which was open between 5-10 am and 4-8 pm, was also a favourite haunt for youngsters and children.
“I used to come to the park every day with my children and relax as the atmosphere was good,” said Janani, a resident of Tambaram.
However, the Tambaram municipality closed the park in the month of May for maintenance. Residents claimed that the municipality officials had told them the park would be reopened within a month’s time. But, with nearly two months gone by, the facility is still not open for the public.
Stating that they had approached the municipality officials in this regard on several occasions, residents claimed there is a delay in the maintenance work schedule.
When contacted, Tambaram municipal commissioner K Krishnamurthy told DTNext said most of the trees in the park got damaged during Cyclone Vardah in 2016.
“The park is now being renovated at a cost of Rs 55 lakh. We are also constructing a separate place for the public to do yoga inside the park. This is the reason for the work getting delayed. We will open the park by August,” he said.
