Gold, foreign currency seized from air passengers
Customs officials seized a little over one kg of gold worth over 31.5 lakh from two air passengers who arrived on separate flights, at Chennai airport on Thursday.

On the first incident, a 29-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh was arrested for carrying gold hidden inside cassette players. Krishna from Andhra Pradesh was coming from Riyadh. When the officials checked his baggage, they found he had he had brought two cassette players. On suspicion, they dismantled one cassette player and found gold hidden inside the motors. Gold, weighing 810 grams worth Rs 25 lakhs, was recovered from it. Officials seized the gold and arrested Krishna on charges of attempting smuggling gold.
In the next incident, a 52-year-old man was detained after officials seized 210 grams of gold when he landed at the city airport from Sharjah on Thursday morning. Peter from Cuddalore was found carrying gold in his overcoat.
The Customs officials who checked his baggage grew suspicious about his overcoat. When the officials checked it closely, they found that the buttons and the border stones were made of gold, coated with silver. The officials seized the gold worth Rs 6.5 lakhs.
Customs officials seized US dollars, worth Rs five lakh, from a passenger at Chennai airport on Wednesday. Jaffer Ali (34) from Chennai arrived at Chennai airport from Colombo.
His unusual manner of walking attracted the attention of Customs officials.
When they called him back and checked him again after taking him to separate room, the officials found dollars sealed in polythene cover, hidden in his rectum. The officials seized the money and detained him for further enquiry.
