Drunk lawyer runs car into vehicles at MRC Nagar, three critical

Six men suffered grievous injuries after a drunk lawyer ploughed his car through a number of vehicles at MRC Nagar on Monday. Three of the six are stated to be critical.

Among the injured, Marcus, Amir Jahan and Abubakkar, sustained injuries on their heads and shoulders. They are yet to record their statements with the police. 

The driver of the car, Benz Regan (37), who is said to be a lawyer hailing from Kanniyakumari and a resident of Thoraipakkam was arrested by Adyar Traffic Investigation police. He was heading home and drove the car under the influence of alcohol, police said. The accident took place around 3.30 pm close to MRC hall at MRC Nagar. The speeding car rammed into four two-wheelers, a van and an SUV before coming to a halt. Shocked passers-by rushed to the rescue of victims and shifted them to Royapettah Government Hospital. Further investigation is on. 

There have been similar incidents in the past. In December 2017, a speeding luxury car driven by a businessman ran amok on Gandhi Mandapam road leaving one person dead and three others, including a professor injured. 

The same year, three persons, including an 11-year-old boy were killed after being hit by a police vehicle near Kalpakkam, 50 kms from the city.

In November 2017, a drunk college student Naveeth Ahmed (20) crashed his car into a line of parked autorickshaws on the pavement on Dr Radhakrishnan Salai near Royapettah, killing one.
