The government high school situated in Thukathurai has more than 500 students enrolled till Class 10. The school, which was constructed way back in 1973, is an important institution for students from villages in the neighbourhood like Maamandur, Kodithandalam, Natrajapuram, Pudu colony and Samaathuvapuram.
But for higher studies, students from these areas are forced to travel to much farther distance to Chengalpattu or Maduranthagam. Due to this, the local villagers had requested the government to upgrade the school by adding Classes 11 and 12. When the Parent-Teachers Association was asked to pay Rs 2 lakh for upgrading the school, the villagers joined together to pool in the sum and paid it in 2013. But even after that, the school remained a high school, with seemingly no efforts to upgrade it as
assured.
On Friday, the School Education Department announced the list of 100 schools that were to be upgraded from high school to higher secondary. This government school at Thukathurai not being present in the list irked the parents, who protested outside the school on Friday morning along with their children.
Maduranthagam police and Kancheepuram Chief Educational Officer held peace talks with the protesting parents and students. The CEO promised the protesters that the school name would be added in the next list. Following the assurance, the parents dispersed.
