The boy, Abdullah, was with his family members at the Haj Committee office to see off his grandfather, who had embarked on Haj pilgrimage to Mecca. After dropping his grandfather at Chennai airport, the family had returned to the room of the Haj Committee office in the third floor where the incident happened around 1 am on Wednesday, police said.
Abdullah climbed on top of a suitcase and was trying to see the road below when he slipped and fell from the height. “The boy suffered severe head injury and was admitted to the Child Trust Hospital in Nungambakkam. He died without responding to the treatment,” police said.
The incident left boy’s mother in a state of shock. Due to this, the family members have not disclosed the news about the death of the boy to her. Instead, they pacified her stating that he was under treatment and took her to her home in Hubli, Karnataka.
Police said Abdullah’s father Mosim runs a meat stall in their native Hubli. Mosim’s wife and her parents, and their two children aged four and two years came down to Chennai on Tuesday, and were staying at one of the rooms provided by the Haj Committee.
The child’s body was handed over to his grandmother and uncle, who returned to their native with the body. Basin Bridge police have registered a case.
