For those in the business of surveillance equipment, the campaign is proving to be a boon. Rangesh, the branch manager of Mercury Solutions shares the common reasons why people choose to buy the cameras. “Most of the people started buying CCTV cameras after the police persuaded them that it helps in surveillance. We have had individuals as well as resident welfare associations wishing to install the cameras,” said Rangesh.

“There is also a sense of security that people, especially those in the outskirts, feel once the cameras are installed as it may deter miscreants,” he added.

While there is a lot to choose from, when it comes to the CCTV cameras, the most popular destination seems to be the electronics hub of Ritchie Street. Haneef, a proprietor selling surveillance technology, said, “People who have little knowledge about cameras come to us as we have a reputation of selling good quality products at low prices.

“Our sale, however, have increased ever since the police started stressing on installing the cameras in buildings,” said Hannef.

The items on sale at Ritchie Street, though cheap, are said to be imported from China. Most products do not come with on-site service or warranty. The customers may be forced to take the item to the shop in case they are not happy with the service.

Also available are CCTV cameras that can be assembled with parts imported from Taiwan. Some brands, however, have fully functional manufacturing units that produce the parts for the cameras and assemble them in the country under the Make in India initiative.
