Around 8.30 pm on June 24, Harish Kumar (38) and his father Shyam Sunder (60) from St Thomas Mount were returning home in their car. When nearing Butt Road signal, an eight-member group on five motorcycles stopped the car and threatened them at knifepoint and decamped with two suitcases thinking they contained money.
The suspects were traced with the help of the CCTV camera footage from a nearby residence and a fuel refilling station. Based on Harish’s complaint, the St Thomas Mount police registered a case and launched a hunt. The team led by Assistant Commissioner P Mohandoss narrowed down on the main suspects, R Leo (27), a resident of Tiruvottiyur, and S Lawrence (27), of Maduvangarai.
The duo had studied together at an ITI institute in Egmore, and were involved in another robbery in St Thomas Mount. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Leo, who often visited the Guindy Race Course for betting, noticed Harish Kumar taking the collection money in his car after each race. Leo told this to Lawrence, and together they devised a plan to steal the cash.
Through his friends in Vyasarpadi, Lawrence got together six autorickshaw drivers to assist them. As per the plan, Leo and Lawrence monitored Harish, Shyam Sundar and uncle Rajendra Kumar on the car.
Based on their tip off, the henchmen intercepted the car after blocking Butt Road by parking the bikes on the road. After tracking down Leo and Lawrence, police arrested the other six suspects –E Rathnam (23), K Jagadeeshwaran (23), R Abinesh (23), K Dellibabu (23), D Prakash (23), and K Saravanan (26), all hailing from Vyasarpadi.
