Jewellery shop employee steals from owner’s house, buys plot

The MKB Nagar police cracked a burglary case at a jeweller’s house within a day and arrested his employee, who had bought a plot near Kancheepuram with the stolen money. The police also recovered Rs 2 lakh cash and 33 sovereigns from him, which, interestingly, was hidden inside the jeweller’s house itself.

The accused, identified as A Ragu (20), was arrested and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday. The victim, B Rajendrakumar (47) of MKB Nagar, who runs a jewellery shop called Manish Jewellers and Pawn Brokers in the locality, had kept 33 sovereigns of jewels and Rs 7 lakh in cash inside a cupboard in the bedroom at his house. On Friday, he looked for the valuables and was shocked to find them missing. He immediately lodged a complaint at MKB Nagar police station.

As Ragu was the only person to frequent the house to do the chores, police interrogated him. Though he initially refused, Ragu later confessed to having stolen the jewels and cash four months ago. He had hidden the jewels and Rs 2 lakh cash within the house and bought a plot for the remaining Rs 5 lakh in Villupuram, where his sister is married and settled. The land documents were seized from him.
