“The accused K Anupkumar of Redhills had buried 90 sovereigns of jewels in his house in Red Hills and pledged about 50 sovereigns with pawn brokers,” said police. He already has several cases pending against him in Pallikaranai and Kanathur areas.

Meanwhile, Velachery police recently received a tip-off that he was spotted in their jurisdiction and secured him in connection with a robbery case. A pawn shop receipt was also seized from him. During further interrogation, he confessed to having burgled over 150 sovereigns of jewels from 18 houses in a year.

Based on his confession, the jewels were recovered from his house as well as some pawn brokers. The investigation officer said that Anupkumar used to target locked houses and burgled them with the help of his aide Venkatesan. “After Venkatesan died recently, Anupkumar carried out the heists on his own,” said the officer.

He was earlier residing in Guindy and moved to Redhills after slums in Guindy were cleared. Anupkumar’s brother Aravindkumar is also a burglar and followed his footsteps to become rich.
