The deceased were identified as Kanniappan (55), a farmer and Ranganayagi (52) from Santhamangalam village near Maduranthagam. The injured Lakshmi (46) was also from the same village. Police said Kanniappan used to visit Painchur one-day market held every Wednesday for selling vegetables. On Wednesday at around 10 pm, Kanniappan was returning home from the market on his two-wheeler when the mishap took place. When he came to the Painchur bus stop, Ranganayagi and Lakshmi, who had also come to sell their vegetables asked Kanniappan to drop them home.
When they were nearing Viluthamangalam village, a minivan coming in the opposite direction collided head-on with the two-wheeler. “In the impact, all the three were thrown off and suffered severe injuries,” the police said. The van driver fled from the spot after the mishap. Later, onlookers alerted the police and an ambulance was called for. Kanniappan and Ranganayagi died on the spot while Lakshmi was rushed to Chengalpattu medical hospital.
