The victim was identified as Kavitha (name changed), a resident of Gemini Nagar in Pallikaranai, who is a first-year BA student at the Government Arts and Science college in Perumbakkam.

Police said Kavitha was reserved girl, who usually avoided interaction with most other students. But she was reportedly close to a friend, Saravanan (18) who hails from the same locality, which apparently angered the other youth in the area.

At around 3.30 pm on Monday, when Kavitha was walking on Veerabadran street to her house from the college, two men on a bike wearing helmet stopped her. They asked her why she was talking only to Saravanan and not to others. However, Kavitha ignored them and continued to walk.

Suddenly, the youth took out a blade and slashed her throat and hands and fled from the spot. Her loud cries attracted the attention of passers-by, who rushed her to a private hospital nearby and also informed the Pallikaranai police.
