The police said that they had summoned her husband in connection with a petty case but she assumed that police were favouring the complainant and attempted self-immolation.
The victim, Renuka of Anbu Nagar in Koladi, works as a caretaker of senior citizens while her husband Gajendran is a salesman. Police said that there was a fight between her family and her neighbour Amirthavalli over construction of a bathroom.
As Renuka’s bathroom’s roof was protruding in the way to Amirthavai’s house, the latter lodged a complaint at Tiruverkadu police station. While police summoned Gajendran for an inquiry on Tuesday afternoon, Renuka followed him to the station with a can of petrol. While police were inquiring Gajendran inside the station, Renuka accused the police of favouring Amirthavalli and doused herself in petrol and set herself ablaze. Hearing her cries for help, police personnel rushed to her rescue and put out the fire. She was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where she has been under intensive care.
