When I was studying in Stella Maris, I was standing in the bus stop outside the campus one day, waiting for the 29C bus I would take home. Usually, the buses were frequent but on that day, I waited for nearly 40 minutes with no luck. Hunger notwithstanding, I decided to hail an auto rickshaw. Five minutes later, one pulled up in front of me and I saw a pretty face smiling at me. It was the first time I was seeing a woman driving an auto! I instantly felt my chest swell with pride and I hopped in as she turned on the meter. During the ride, she told me that she took to this profession because post her husband’s death, for if she hadn’t her children would have dropped out of school. “Today, I have the confidence that I can enrol them for higher studies and who knows, maybe they’ll become really successful in life!”
