State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) Tamil Nadu director G Arivoli told DT Next that the printing of textbooks with new syllabus will be over by February next year. The new syllabus would help students face any competitive exams in future, he added.

The state-owned SCERT is the nodal agency that prepares new curriculum for Classes 1-12. The government has already launched new syllabi for Classes 1, 6, 9 and 11 this academic year.

According to the SCERT director, zonal level meetings were organised periodically in the state to elicit suggestions from teachers, parents, professors, educationalists, subject experts and other stakeholders. “All their suggestions and ideas were incorporated for a comprehensive and a new look curriculum,” he added.

The official said that beside Class 12, new syllabus will also be introduced for class 2, 7 and 10 from the next academic year.  “All the text books will contain Quick Response codes which will lead to high resolution visual contents of the subject with practical explanation”, he added.

“After several salient points emerged during the review meetings, it was decided that the teaching of Tamil should encompass the culture and tradition of the Tamil,” he said, adding, “Accordingly, the textbooks will contain the glossary of words, idioms and phrases.”

Similarly, the teaching of English will focus on creative language skills and communication skills. Poems of Indian poets should be included in the textbooks, he said. Likewise, teaching of Mathematics will have more practice in decimals, with secondary level concepts being linked with Higher Secondary level, he added.

About science, the official noted that more emphasis has been given for lab activities. Traditional herbs and rural agriculture practices have also been given more importance with the thrust on promoting learning by doing, he added.
