The deceased, Ranganathan (25), was employed at MEPZ in Tambaram Sanatorium and the accused, Bharathiraja (30), runs a spare parts shop in Border Thottam with his brother Balamurugan. The duo shared room with two others – Mahadev and Sidh – in West Mogappair.

On Sunday, Bharathiraja and Ranganathan were alone as others had gone out after lunch. On their return, they were shocked to see Ranganathan lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries and alerted JJ Nagar police.

During investigation, police found out that Bharathiraja and Ranganathan had previous enmity as Ranganathan spoke ill of the former’s family. They launched a hunt for Bharathiraja who was absconding, and secured him on Monday morning.

Interrogation revealed that there was an argument between Rangathan and Bharathiraja after which the latter left the house. However, he returned after an hour with an iron rod and hit Rangathan who was asleep. Bharathiraja was remanded in judicial custody.
