A top level PWD official said, “The work is expected to be completed before this month end. We are removing accumulated silt near the slider which is done to ensure smooth flow of water. The government has sanctioned the project with an aim to regulate the supply of water to the city.”
Under the Telugu Ganga Project, the city receives 8 tmcft of Krishna water between July and October. As part of it, the water from Srisailam reservoir, which is fast filling up, is diverted to Somasaila reservoir. On reaching the storage level, water will be directed to Kandaleru reservoir that now has only dead storage level.
“The water is supplied from Somasaila reservoir to Kandaleru until the former reached the storage capacity of 8 tmcft. Currently, the reservoir has a capacity of 4 tmcft only. Whereas our reservoirs in the city are having a dead storage level. The situation will improve with the inflow,” the PWD official said.
However, the official noted that the funds allocated for this work is inadequate. “Of the total amount, 12 per cent has been deducted as GST. We are working with a lot of constraints. But the work is expected to be over before Krishna water arrives,” he said.
