Fake I-T SMS: Man loses 6 lakh

A private television channel employee lost Rs 6 lakh from his bank account after he tried to upload his Income Tax returns using a link that he received in a phishing SMS.

The victim, P Henry Blessy Kumar (52) of Little Mount, on Tuesday night received a message which asked him to file the I-T returns using the link embedded in it to get refund to his account. Believing it, he uploaded his bank credentials, after which a man contacted him claiming to be an Income Tax officer. He received the debit card details and account details of his family members on the pretext of seeking more information. However, Rs 6 lakh was debited from Henry’s account minutes after the conversation. Money was debited from his wife and children’s accounts as well. Following this, Henry lodged a complaint at Kotturpuram police station. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
