Skill-training courses for school dropouts

Tamil Nadu government introduced seven job-oriented courses in various sectors to create employment opportunities for those who dropped out of school after completing Class 8 and 10.

The courses will be conducted by the Directorate of Employment and Training in Guindy under the Department of Labour and Employment’s guidance.

The courses for Class 10 pass-outs includes stenographer and secretarial assistant; two-years courses on instrument mechanic, information and communication technology system maintenance, and one-year course on computer-aided embroidery and designing and fashion designing technology. Class 8 pass-outs can opt for one-year courses on sewing technology and surface ornamentation techniques (embroidery).

Chennai Collector A Shanmugasundaram said that during the course period, all students will be given free laptops, bicycles, books, drawing instruments, bus pass, uniform and shoes. They will also get a stipend of Rs 500 per month.

He said that the courses will be offered free of cost and that the government will ensure that the students are placed in various companies after the completion of the course.

Moreover, private sector employers will be provided access to the data base to fill up vacancies in their establishments. Also, a web portal was launched to help the students find the right organisation for employment.
