Imposter IPS officer cheats 100 people of 3 crore

A 28-year-old man, hailing from Tiruvannamalai district, was arrested on Thursday for posing as an IPS officer and cheating more than 100 people to the tune of Rs 3 crore.

According to police, he was arrested based on a complaint from Balamurugan (29) of Tiruvannamalai district. The accused Navappan told Balamurugan that he was an IPS officer, working as a government secretary. He used photos taken within the secretariat premises to make the victims believe his claims.

The victims said that he used to come in a car with blue beacon and claimed that he can help them get government jobs if they pay him money. Believing him, Balamurugan and 10 others gave Rs 45 lakh to Navappan. While he couldn’t get the jobs as promised, he threatened the victims when they asked for their money back.

Based on his complaint, police arrested Navappan. During investigation, it was found that he has cheated more than 100 people to the tune of Rs 3 crore, promising them of various government jobs. He also threatened to murder the victims if they ask their money back. He was remanded in judicial custody.
