Head constable Balasubramaniam (54), attached to the Tiruvottiyur police station, was returning home at Pulianthope police quarters on Thursday evening. Clad in plainclothes, Balasubramaniam was riding through Royapuram bridge around 6.30 pm when a man came running to him seeking help for his friend who reportedly suffered epileptic seizure.

When Balasubramaniam tried to help the man who was lying on the bridge, a third person snatched his mobile phone and ran away. But the gang did not realise that their target was a policeman, who quickly overpowered the man who faked the seizure before he could escape.

During interrogation, the man, S Karthik (30) of Triplicane, provided information about his associates S Sathish (19) of Nagapattinam and J Daniel (28) of Tiruchy, who too were arrested.

On Thursday, the police arrested Venkatesan (19), Surya (20), Saravanan (19) and a juvenile.
