The man who appeared to be in his 40s was wearing a dhoti and shirt. He started climbing the tree at 9 pm. A few curious people stopped to watch, however, to their shock, the man removed his dhoti and even as they watched, he tied a noose around his neck. Bystanders started shouting out in alarm, but even before anyone could react, the man jumped off the tree.
The public alerted the police, who rushed to the spot. However, the man was dead by the time they came. The body was brought down using rescue equipment. “He jumped down before any rescue effort was initiated,” Mambalam police inspector Prabu said. “He was dead by the time we brought him down.” Police have sent his body to Royapettah government hospital for post-mortem.
Since there were no documents found in his clothes, police are yet to ascertain the victim’s identity. A probe is on.
