Auto service that empowers trans people
When Mansoor Ali Khan started Makkal (people) Auto, he had only two objectives — to provide a livelihood option to women in need and to make the daily commute of women safe and hassle-free. Now, Mansoor has come up with a unique project to support the transgender community in the city.

“Though there are many measures to make life barrier-free for transgender people, many still ill-treat them. Moreover, there are fewer job opportunities for transgender people and I wanted to put a stop to this discrimination. After employing women auto drivers, I realised how empowering and self-sustaining it is for them to be financially independent,” says the entrepreneur.
Mansoor and team are planning to give employment to transgenders as auto drivers. “We have started calling for applications and many have approached us. Giving them a job is one of the best ways to uplift them and help them lead a decent life. As an initial step, we will train around 100 trans pilots (they are not addressed as drivers, but pilots) and provide autos as well.
These autos will be fitted with a tablet that has an embedded camera, audio recorder and a GPS tracking system and runs on a special software,” says Mansoor.
Apart from this, M Auto also provides a free ride for transgender people, for up to 10 km. “When you log into our app, apart from the two gender (male and female) options, we have added one more option - transgender. In order to ensure their safety and to make sure they are not ill-treated, we have added a special clause in the agreement to all the normal drivers. If any transgender rider complains of any abuse, we will remove them from our M Auto family. The auto and cab services in the city sometimes discriminate against transgender people and it’s disheartening to see that,” he shares.
