The Chintadripet police had booked him under the IPC sections of 153 A (promoting enmity on the grounds of religion) 504 (intentional insult with intention to provoke breach of peace) 294 B (uttering obscene word in public places) and 506 (I) (criminal intimidation).
On Tuesday, the inspector proposed detention of the lawyer under the Goondas Act to the Commissioner and the latter approved of it.
The incident took place around 9 am when VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan had come to pay homage to the statue located near Simpson junction on Anna Salai. Jagadeesan, who came in a two-wheeler, hurled his footwear at the statue and raised slogans.
VCK cadre immediately nabbed and assaulted him before handing him over to the police. Leaders of various political parties, including the ruling AIADMK and the opposition DMK, condemned the incident and demanded stern action against the lawyer.
