All 48 houses at Vinayaga Nagar in Polichalur near Pallavaram, built on encroached land, would be demolished within the next two days, said officials.

After the government ordered the removal of encroachments on the riverbed, Revenue Department had officials issued notices to the 48 houses. All encroachers were provided with houses at Nukkampalayam Slum Clearance Board colony. However, they refused to vacate.

After issuing a final warning 15 days ago by a tahsildar, officials and police personnel disconnected the power and water supply for all the houses and asked the residents to vacate.

Though many began to vacate their houses, a few sought extension till March citing their children’s education. Meanwhile, one Karnan (30) of Vinayaga Nagar tried to set himself ablaze. Officials said the demolition would be completed in two days and the land would be handed over to PWD.
