The first phase of the election was conducted in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Perungudi, Sholinganallur and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar zones and the committee members were elected.

“Six candidates from scheduled caste, backward class, woman, differently abled, minority and general categories were elected on Thursday. Executive engineers of the respective zones will act as chairmen and will include officials from Police department and NGOs,” a Corporation official said.

Explaining the roles of the street vendors committee, the official added that the committee will streamline the hawkers vendors and give recommendations to the civic body on regularising the vendors.

According to the official, Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, mandates the local bodies to form the committee. Although the members are elected for nine zones in the city, the committee will come into effect once the members for remaining zones are elected and the government notifies the same.
