The ever-active chain snatchers in the city relieved three elderly women, including an 81-year-old, of their jewels.
In the first incident, a few men approached Shenbagavalli (81) of Peravallur and offered to give her a cheaper tariff option for set-top box connection if she visited their office.
Believing them, Shenbagavalli went with the youngsters in one of their bikes. However, to her shock, they stopped the bike in a deserted place and snatched her 11-sovereign chain before fleeing the spot. Based on her complaint, Peravallur police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
Meanwhile, five sovereigns were snatched from an elderly woman in Koyambedu. The victim, Chinthamani of Tiruvannamalai, was on her way to board a bus to her hometown when the incident took place. Koyambedu police have registered a case based on her complaint and have launched a hunt for the suspects. In Pallikaranai, too, an elderly woman was robbed of her five-sovereign chain. Based on a complaint by Mohanasundaravalli, the Pallikaranai police have registered a case.
11 sovereigns burgled on bus
A woman lost her handbag containing 11 sovereigns to unidentified burglars in a moving bus near Koyambedu. The victim Kalpana (22) from Chittoor had come to the city along with her brother to attend a wedding. She boarded a bus on Thursday night at Koyambedu and kept her bag at overhead luggage space. When she checked a few minutes later, the bag containing jewels was not to be found. Shocked, Kalpana lodged a complaint at the Koyambedu police station.
