The victim, Paramasivam (70), is a resident of Kabali Thottam in Mylapore and was going for a morning walk on Luz Church Road when the incident took place. While he was walking, he was stopped by a man, who arrived in an autorickshaw.
The passenger asked Paramasivam whether he knows any masonry workers in the locality. He then told Paramsivam that he is an officer attached to the intelligence wing of the city police and offered to drop the elderly man near his house. Paramasivam boarded the autorickshaw oblivious to what awaited him.
The passenger continued the conversation and ‘explained’ how police officers detect whether gold jewels were stolen property with the help of a code. Meanwhile, the autorickshaw had reached T Nagar and the victim failed to notice it as he was immersed in conversation.
The passenger then requested Paramasivam to hand over his ring to do a demonstration and he obliged.
After receiving the ring, the passenger asked the driver to stop the vehicle on Habibullah Road and wanted Paramasivam to get down. He also took out a knife and threatened Paramasivam of stabbing him if he made any noise and escaped in the autorickshaw. Based on Paramasivam’s complaint, the police have registered a case and have launched a hunt for the auto-borne duo.
