“Under rule 290 of The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Rules, the speaker had to intimate the arrest of an MLA to other members of the state legislature. Using the power, Speaker sent the official communication to all the fellow legislators through post and mail,” said an official from Assembly department.
Karunaas was arrested for his alleged inflammatory speech abusing Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami, policemen and other castes. He was remanded till October 5 and was lodged at Vellore prison.
The official also added that the information of arrest, remand and lodging in prison should also be informed to the Speaker. “Under rule 288 and 289 of The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Rules, the concerned authority who had arrested an MLA on criminal charges should communicate to the Speaker about the arrest and the reason for the arrest,” the official said.
Once the Speaker receives the official communication he has to send the communication to other MLAs and it is a regular procedure which had to be followed by the Speaker, added the official.
