The incident happened around 1 am on Monday at their house in Sarathy Nagar in Velachery after a quarrel broke out over the dog.
According to police, the pet dog, a threeyearold Beagle named Barani, has always been a point of contention between him and wife J Selvi since their marriage in 2016. Whenever they fought, Jeganath would allegedly take it out on the dog.
On Sunday, Selvi went to the beauty parlour where she works without speaking to Jeganath due to a fight.
As it was a holiday, Jeganath stayed back home and did not feed the dog. When she returned, the couple got into another fight. An infuriated Jeganath hit the dog with sticks and iron rods and killed it. Selvi tried to stop him, but in vain. He was arrested following her complaint.
