‘Civic body hiked property tax even before revision’

“The civic officials have revised the tax rates for the year 2018-2019 following the court order. However, the tax to be paid by a few residents in T Nagar has already been increased from 2017-2018 itself,” V S Jayaraman, member of T Nagar Residents Welfare Association, said.

He added that a few members of his association, and residents of Motilal Street in T Nagar, were shocked after they found that the tax amount has been increased to 60 per cent prior to revision. 

When they contacted Chennai Corporation, the officials there explained that the residents have been marked as tenants during re-assessment. But in reality, the residents are owners of the building not tenants, Jayaraman said.

A Chennai Corporation official said the reassessment was made based on the available details. Meanwhile, the facility for self-reassessment of property tax in the Corporation website remained unfunctional for hours on Tuesday evening, irking the residents who had visited the website for self-assessment.
