History-sheeter dies in police custody, kin stage protest

A history-sheeter, who was in police custody at the MKB Nagar station, died on Sunday. He was taken to the police station for an inquiry in connection with a robbery case.

The deceased, Karthik, has two murder cases pending against him apart from an attempt to murder case and several robbery cases. On Saturday, Karthik and two others waylaid a pedestrian Mayil and robbed him after attacking him. Based on his complaint, the MKB Nagar police traced the suspects to Anna Nagar and secured them on Saturday night. 

Police said that Karthik started vomiting after lunch on Sunday and he was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Doctors informed the police that Karthik was developing chest pain and referred him to a government hospital. However, Karthik succumbed without responding to treatment at the Stanley Medical College Hospital. 

Hearing the news about Karthik’s death, his kin alleged that Karthik died of police excess and staged a protest in front of the police station on Sunday. Police sources said that the autopsy will be take place on Monday. “We hope that the autopsy report will explain the reason for his death and further action will be taken based on that,” a senior police officer noted.
