According to a Chennai Corporation official, Toorq India Pvt Ltd has been selected to provide PMS in the city through a tender process. “On-street parking management and guidance system in the city will be implemented on design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) basis,” the official said.

The officials also gathered suggestions from the residents at a stakeholders’ meeting that was held at the office of Regional Deputy Commissioner (Centre) on Tuesday.  Although the civic body has been trying to implement the parking management system along the major bus roads in all zones, it had been decided to operate the PMS in the select areas before extending to other parts. Earlier, a survey was conducted on 471 bus roads and 12,047 equivalent car spaces (ECS) were identified.

The civic body’s previous attempts to implement PMS in the city had failed to fructify. “To ensure successful implementation of PMS, we are going use information technology such as camera sensors and internet. Motorists can detect empty slots by using the geo-mapping facility on their mobile phone. Mobile phone application and smart cards will be developed to facilitate cashless payment for the parking,” the official explained. A penalty from erring drivers would also be collected through the mobile app.

The project would be carried out at a cost of Rs 7.08 crore for five years. The service provider would collect the parking fees from the users and deposit the money to Chennai Corporation’s bank account.

It may be noted that the Greater Chennai Corporation has also decided to implement the city’s first cycle-sharing system in Anna Nagar, Marina and Besant Nagar.
